Use this checklist when you're buying Enercon wind turbines as a distributor, a project operator, or a procurement lead. I've been in purchasing since 2020—well, since late 2019 if you count the handover period. I manage turbine-related procurement for a wind services company—roughly $6M a year in orders and components. I'm not an engineer. I'm the person who asks enough questions to keep the engineers and finance from killing each other.
Everything I'd read about turbine buying said the winning number is cost per kilowatt. In practice, I found that the cheapest quote was rarely the cheapest project once I added installation delays, missing documents, and service gaps. This is the checklist I use now. 1. Verify the seller is actually authorized by Enercon
Enercon is an original wind turbine manufacturer, and it sells through its own project organizations plus a network of authorized distributors for specific markets. 'Authorized' is the key word. A broker can promise you an Enercon turbine wholesale price, but that broker is not the same as an entity that can register the warranty with the manufacturer. Before I ask for pricing, I ask for three things: an authorization letter from Enercon, the name and email of an Enercon contact, and a pro-forma invoice on the seller's official letterhead. If any of those are missing, the quote is not real enough for me.
Checkpoint: Verify the authorization letter directly with Enercon's local office, not with the seller. Also check the stated country of origin. Enercon uses several manufacturing sites, and customs officers care where the 'made in' line is. A false declared origin can delay your shipment and cost you penalty fees.
2. Match the Enercon model to your site wind class
Enercon's range runs from the older E-70 to the newer EP3 and EP5 platforms. That range exists because sites are not all the same. A turbine that is cheap because it is designed for high wind speed can be wrong for a moderate wind site: you pay for extra structure, and you also get less energy at lower speeds because the rotor and cut-in speed do not match the site's curve. The opposite is worse. A large-rotor low-wind model on a turbulent ridgeline will stop often, and every stopped day is lost revenue.
Reference: IEC 61400-1 defines wind turbine classes by reference wind speed and turbulence. Ask the seller for the turbine's wind class certificate and its power curve measured to IEC 61400-12-1. Then get a site-specific energy yield assessment from a third party before you pick a model.
Checkpoint: The Enercon configurator may give you a tower height and rated power option that looks ideal. Confirm the site's wind shear data first. Tower height decisions are hard to reverse.
3. Understand what gearless means for your logistics and service budget
Enercon is known for its direct-drive, gearless concept. No gearbox means no gearbox oil, no high-speed coupling, and no planetary stage replacements. But it also means a large-diameter generator with a heavy nacelle. Heavy lift cranes are priced by tonnage and reach, and gearless nacelles can be heavier than a comparable geared turbine. That is a cost a lot of buyers compare too late.
For spare parts, the budget profile is different: you will be looking at generator segments, power converters, pitch batteries or capacitors, and yaw drives, not gearbox internals. If you're buying a fleet, ask Enercon for recommended spare parts lists and lead times. We hold a small stock of high-failure items for every five turbines. That is probably overkill, but it beats a six-month outage over a $3,000 part.
4. Build a full landed-cost model, not just a per-MW price
Wholesale cost guides always say 'compare EUR/kW.' I'll say it too, but then I'll tell you to go beyond it. Actually, it's not 'go beyond' so much as 'start there.' Per-MW price helps you shortlist suppliers, but it won't tell you which project costs less. Your total cost model should include:
- Ex-works price versus delivered price under the right Incoterm
- Freight, insurance, customs duties, and port handling
- Site access, road widening, and heavy transport permits
- Crane positioning, foundation interface, and installation tools
- Commissioning supervision and training
- First-year remote monitoring or SCADA connection
- Warranty extension and service contract
- Spare parts package and storage
In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, we moved all quotes into a standard spreadsheet with separate columns for every line item. It cut our evaluation time from three weeks to five days and made it obvious which 'low price' quote was actually low only if you did not need training or a site visit.
5. Check certification and documentation before you order
This is the step that got me. I once assumed that because a turbine was German-made and had a CE mark, it was automatically compliant in our country. It was not. The CE declaration covers certain EU directives, but the local grid code requirement was separate. The turbine sat in port for 34 days while the certificate gap was fixed. Storage fees and replanning costs were around $18,000. They warned me about this. I didn't listen.
Before you sign, ask for:
- Type certificate covering the turbine model and configuration
- Declaration of conformity for the applicable EU directives
- Local grid code compliance test reports
- Import classification, country of origin, and supporting customs documents
- Any project-specific permits the seller must provide

6. Confirm aftermarket support and warranty ownership
This is the one most buyers skip until a fault appears. I know, because I skipped a version of it. We chose a distributor because the price was strong and the delivery slot fit. When a warranty claim came up, the distributor's reply was 'you need to contact Enercon directly.' It took weeks to sort out who was responsible, and the clarifications cost legal fees. The issue was not with Enercon; it was with the handoff between distributor and manufacturer. We had no written service transfer agreement.
Ask the seller straight: who owns the warranty, who performs the repairs, and who provides the service procedure? Ask to see the service level agreement in the contract. If the distributor will use third-party technicians, check the technicians' factory training records. Ask about spare parts stock location and response time. A wind turbine can wait for a part; your loan payments usually do not.
Checkpoint: If the wholesale deal includes a service contract, confirm that it is assignable when the distributor relationship changes. You do not want the turbine's warranty tied to a company that may not exist in five years.
7. Put payment milestones in writing
Wholesale turbine payments usually work like this: a deposit on order confirmation, a progress payment when manufacturing is complete, a large payment against shipping documents, and a final payment after commissioning. The issue isn't the schedule; it's the deliverables. Tie each payment to evidence you can see: production photos, inspection report, bill of lading, and a signed handover protocol.
Use a tracker to manage the schedule. I know that sounds too simple, but our old process was email threads and spreadsheets. It worked until it didn't. After we moved to a shared tracker with automatic reminders, we stopped missing milestones, and the accounting team finally trusted the payment calendar. Efficiency is not just a nice-to-have; it is what keeps the project on budget.
Common mistakes buyers make
Three mistakes show up in almost every first wholesale transaction I've reviewed.
First, treating the turbine as an independent machine. The Enercon turbine is a system: tower, foundation adapter, grid cabinet, SCADA, blades, and control system all have to match. A 'fantastic price on the turbine' can disappear when you discover the required tower height is not included in the price.
Second, adding non-ENERCON parts to save money. Some parts are interchangeable, but if a non-approved part fails and can be linked to the modification, the warranty on that assembly can be affected. I've seen a $4,000 part replacement turn into a $60,000 unrecoverable overhaul payment. Save the dollar where it's safe; don't risk the whole nacelle to save 2%.
Third, waiting too long to confirm the production slot. A price guarantee is not the same as a confirmed delivery slot. Enercon's production capacity, especially for a specific configuration, fills quickly. Ask for the slot confirmation in writing. If the seller says 'we'll confirm after the deposit,' you should walk away or adjust your expectations.
Take it from someone who spent too many hours on customs forms. The point of this checklist is not to make buying harder. It's to catch the expensive surprises before they become your problem. If you work through all seven steps, you'll have a clearer picture of the real wholesale cost of Enercon wind turbines—and a much better chance of not regretting the deal.
